Way back in 1999 I was living in a cute little shack on an Orange Grove north of San Diego.
My friend was putting me up in this cozy little out building.
Every weekend I would help him process oranges. Their oranges were primo. They would never send anything green, mis-shaped or too small, on to market. They sold only the best.
It made my heart sick though to see so many unwanted oranges go to waste. I contacted Camp Pendleton and they began sending a truck out on Mondays. Before I left in 2000, we had sent over 4 tons of oranges to the wonderful Marines and families of Camp Pendleton.
If you see food waste, you likely have an opportunity to make a difference in your town.
